[ hal's been waiting for this for a long time. or at least, ever since he heard that rose was setting dirk up on a blind date. dirk, who had been who jake had chosen despite both twins having a crush on him forever, and then they didn't even stay together. they broke up. dirk doesn't deserve this blind date, obviously, even though hal feels a little bad for his subterfuge. only a little.
dirk already had his chance with a hot boy. hal deserves this.
since they're identical, it's not hard. he just never tells dirk where and when the date is set, and goes instead. rose probably clocks him on the way through his convoluted planning, but she never stops him, so it's not like she doesn't in some way approve.
which is how he ends up at one of those subdued sort of fake speakeasy joints just after sunset on a wednesday night because things are quieter then and dirk likes quieter. hal likes quieter too, and neither of them drink, but it's a good first date place because there's atmosphere.
there's a table at the edges of the room that hal sits at to wait for his date to arrive. the only difference between him and dirk are eye colors, and it's not like john would know what each of their eye colors were for a blind date even if hal wasn't wearing the shades that keep anyone from knowing which is which on a nightly basis.
what's the point of being a twin if you're not going to fuck with people?
anyway, everything is going according to how he planned it, though it's oddly complicated. it's fine. he doesn't mind. ]
[ john, for his part, is nervous. he hasn't been out in a while - definitely hasn't been out on a DATE in a while - and isn't entirely sure he still knows how to do it. at least if a blind date goes terribly wrong it can be funny.
he's Dressed Nicely, in the way that someone's parents might dress them for a school presentation or something. clean white shirt! cute little tie! nice pants!
he brought flowers.
he has no idea who he's looking for, but 'an awkward young man scanning the room holding flowers' stands out pretty well. ]
[ oh no, that's cute. hal gets up and it must be john, must be, because rose told dirk he was his type and honestly, honestly, that's both their goddamn types. he strides over, and he is dressed nicely as well, though it's more white dress shirt, black pants, red blazer, obnoxiously red shoes--
--he smiles, and his teeth aren't sharp at all. ]
You must be John?
[ hey, how come the blond got more info than john did. ]
[ oh. yes he takes the flowers! he's still smiling, and in a bit of a presumptuous move, takes john's hand. it's very charming. ]
Come this way, I've got a table over here. I think there's a show on in here tonight? Later on, at least. Also, Rose didn't call you a dweeb. I promise.
I do like to partake of an anime once in a while. I'm glad you're so understanding.
[ wry. once john sits down he sits across from him, gently (with a sense of reverence about him, boy he's good at this) setting the flowers next to them both. ]
What kinds of things do you like? If you're being open minded about the animes.
Well, I've watched an anime or two myself. Also I like movies! I really like disaster movies? I dunno why, they're just really fun. And all my friends say I have the worst taste but they DEFINITELY just don't get the method behind it.
I think it's easy for people to just dunk on their friends' tastes. Even if they were right, who cares as long as you're enjoying yourself? That's what matters.
It's okay if you haven't! You should watch it sometime though, it's really good. But it's best enjoyed at like a party or something so everyone can get excited at the good parts together.
Oh, I get it. Yeah, sometimes crowds are a bit much for me too. We could do a movie night later if you want! Honestly even if things don't go well I would probably still want to show you Con Air.
[ this boy... is cute, john thinks. a cute shy young man. adorable, he is going to show him so many movies. ]
[ hal is pretty smitten already. he wants this boy in particular to be his boy forever. this was a wonderful plan. he's so smart. john is so cute. ]
We'll try not to put all our eggs in one basket, then. But I would like to watch it with you, based off your enthusiasm. I'd love to see something that gets that much reaction out of you. It's bound to be good.
I like to look at technical aspects more than the emotional and psychological aspects. A movie with good practical effects will capture my heart instantly.

That's me. It's nice to meet you too. I'll admit, I was nervous. I haven't been out in a long time.

[ is he still holding the flowers out. hal are you gonna take the flowers. they're extremely store bought. ]
I haven't either, to be honest. I was turning into a bit of a hermit. At least according to Rose.

I didn't know they had shows here! That's pretty neat. And it's okay if she did, I am KIND OF a dweeb.

Even if so, that's alright. I'm a huge nerd.

I'm a little gun shy about parties though, maybe we could make a second date of it if things go well tonight?

It's REALLY good. It's my favorite. Do you watch a lot of movies?
no subject
I do watch some, but I love seeing other people's tastes. I think it tells you a lot about them as a person.
